Around School and Campus
This first roll of film was discovered still inside the camera when I dug it out of its box.
The first four pictures are from Christmas time 2007. Unfortunately, some of the film was exposed, so many of these old pictures are forever lost.
Obviously , the film is long expired, by at least 10+ years; the quality isn't the greatest.
The photos of my dog (Jake) were the first pictures I've taken with a 35mm camera. I assume the old photos were taken by my mother.
Location: Home; Back Patio
About: A wintery night, likely after visiting with family
Location: Home; Back Patio
About: The amount of snow we used to get back then brings such warm memories.
Location: Home; Back Patio
About: A stone bird statue covered with snow, hard to tell at first.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: This is my dad and me (I am on the sled). Although the image has an ominous look to it, I find this image cute and nostalgic.
Location: Home; Kitchen
About: You can see part of the film that was exposed due to light here (the fiery white on the right). This was the first picture I took after having dug up the camera.
Location: Home; Kitchen
About: As is the theme for the rest of this roll, my subject is Jake, the dog.
Location: Home; Kitchen
About: This image is very dark, largely due to the film being expired. I'm sure using flash would have helped, but that can't be changed now.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: Jake loves to roam around the front yard, sniffing for all the animals that come by. This was taken from me sitting on a swing.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: Jake investigating this bush a bit closer.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: Something about this picture I really enjoy. From the faded look to the Fall grass and leaves, it looks 30 years older than it really is.
These photos showcase my first full roll of film and how I used the camera. Being new to this hobby, I looked and traveled around to find the subject of my next photo.
I hadn't yet built up a knowledge of photography concepts and techniques; I didn't even understand the difference between different ISO film speeds.
I'm pretty much going around taking pictures of anything, just so I can feel and hear the mechanical sounds of the camera working. Few things are as satisfying.
Location: Home; Living Room
About: Compared to the previous roll of film, there's a big difference in color and brightness. Although I don't think this is a great photo, it's simple, which is a good thing.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: This picture is beautiful, probably one of the best I've taken. What I love most about it are the colors; everything from the leaves, the grass, and Jake matches and goes together well.
Location: Home; Upstairs
About: A plant I was given recently to this photo being taken. The rainy environment behind the subject (to me) is very peaceful; a good day to stay in.
Location: Home; Kitchen
About: My Grandmother makes the best Bundt Cake; this one is a coffee cake. She usually makes them around the holiday or for birthdays, and when she does, everyone starts cutting into it reserving pieces for them self.
Location: Kent; Near Kent State University
About: We drove to Kent State University to visit my Brother. While we were stopped at a red light I took this picture of the cafe; definitely a place I'd love to try.
Location: Kent State University; My Brothers Dorm Room
About: While we were at Kent, we stopped by to see the dorm room he and his roommate are staying in. They had stuff everywhere, so much to look at! I found this table/window to be the most decorated part of their room. Each time we visited them, more stuff had been added as decoration.
Location: Kent; Near Kent State University
About: At first I wasn't sure if I should include this photo or not. This was taken from inside our car of the car next to us. Why? Well you can very vaguely see the eyes and head of a dog. The rain on the window doesn't help to make this clear, but that's almost a good thing, as the image has a mysterious feel to it.
Location: Berea; Coe Lake
About: Probably after I finished class one day, I headed out to Coe Lake to take pictures. This area is very pretty this time of year; pictures is the gazebo.
Location: Berea; Coe Lake
About: This is a picture from the gazebo side of the lake, opposite from where I was standing in the previous photo.
Location: Berea; Coe Lake
About: This is the grassy area right outside from where the gazebo is. Pictured are many Canadian Geese, who love to roam around this area in particular.
Location: Berea; Coe Lake
About: Another view of Coe Lake and the surrounding nature.
Location: Berea; Coe Lake
About: A large stone with "CITY OF BEREA 1836" engraved onto it. Berea is known for their sandstone, so finding things like this isn't too hard.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: While all other trees in our neighborhood had lost their leaves, this acorn tree in our neighbors yard still stands strong and full of leaves. They do eventually fall, but not until there's snow on the ground.
Location: Ohio
About: This is a very neat building, I love this style of architecture. It's a shame I cannot remember where this was taken.
Location: Home; Foyer
About: One of Jakes favorite pass-times is looking outside our front door. Here he gets to see all the people, animals, and cars that go by. I like that the focus is off of Jake and on the houses outside; the blurry Jake looking at you is cute.
Location: Home; Foyer
About: This is one of Jakes favorite places to sit. Like at the front door, he can lay down and look outside, but can also see us when we are in the office (the room in the background). He likes to be near us; always needing to know where we are!
Location: Home; Bedroom
About: When a foreign exchange student came to live with us for half a year, this is the room we gave him; this being my room at the time meant I had to move out into a different room. After he went back home, I never made the move back in, so it's stayed exactly like the way he left it.
With this roll of film I began utilizing a different point and shoot camera than before: The Olympus Stylus. It's basically the same camera but more compact and with less features.
I wanted to get a feel for how this camera worked, which is pretty similar to it's upgraded cousin. This roll captures the same style and soul of the previous; seeking the satisfying thrill of a new hobby.
Location: Home; Living Room
About: This is the part of our house that changes most between the seasons. With the picture being taken in November, we had it decorated for Fall. All the pumpkins you see were hand-knit by my Nana.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Knowlton Center
About: The Data Vis Lab is where I spent most my time over my last school year; it's where I had class, met for the Cybersecurity Club, Interviewed for Jobs, and studied. Since the room is locked, not everyone had access, which was nice as it was almost always empty. What's pictured here is one of many things that have been drawn on the board over the year. The full phrase is "The children are data", no sure what this means though.
Location: Home; Upstairs
About: It's not a fancy chandelier by any means, but I still like it. I took this photo also to test the camera; notice that the background is blurred, especially everything in the window.
Location: Home; Upstairs
About: My desk upstairs is right next to a window that overlooks exactly what is pictured. An ordinary Fall day with a cloudy sky, it's nothing special by description, but a beautiful view through my eyes.
Location: Nanas House; Living Room
About: During the Fall and Winter, Nana keeps these flowers inside so they can stay alive to the Spring. These flowers are very beautiful, and she has a lot that she keeps all around her home. I'm not sure who the shadow is pictured right; this gives the picture a creepy nature which contrasts the beauty given by the flowers.
Location: Nanas House; Living Room
About: Nana has so much in her home that is worth photographing. These flowers for instance were hand made by her; carefully knit together. She does a lot of knitting in general, from flowers, pumpkins, christmas trees, teddy bears. If you show her a picture of something, in time she can knit together something amazing.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: The Falls is what we call the nature park. The following pictures showcase this area, which is very dynamic; walking around you'll find crumbled stone, the main creek, bridges, and much more.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: It's not the most obvious, but in the distance you can see the covered bridge.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: One of the stone bridges in this park. The water here was shallow enough to walk down under it.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: There are many waterfalls in this park (thus the name). This one is the biggest all.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: A higher up view of the waterfall from the previous picture. Taken from the top of a bridge.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: This picture overlooks a majority of the park and its waterfalls from a higher up position.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: While walking around The Falls, there isn't much paved paths, rather the trails are all dirt, and in the Fall, leaves.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: A picture of a random house right above the river below. I'd imagine living there would be nice, enjoying the view from above and the sound of the water at night.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: Under yet another bridge at the park, you can find a bunch of graffiti. Some of what you can find is funny, other drawings are really impressive; this is just a small sample of what you can find.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: Still part of the same park you can find this large grassy area. In the Winter this becomes the sledding hill, by Spring it's where local businesses and crafts set up. It's not a tall hill my any means, but as a kid it felt massive.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: I love walking along the rails, especially this time of year when the park is mostly empty; this picture gives a vibe of emptiness: no cars, no people, no trains.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: Another picture taken on the rails. I like this photo for the same reasons as the previous, although I think I didn't do as good framing the picture: I should've better centered the middle rail.
Location: Olmsted Falls; River Park
About: More of the waterfalls you can find. I love how smooth the stones are from the water constantly running over it. The challenge of taking pictures here are these rocks; they get really slippery, and yes, I may have slipped at least once.
Location: Olmsted Falls; Church Building
About: When entering or leaving the park you pass this church. It's right along the top edge of the park, so it's looking over the waterfalls and stream below. It's a very pretty building, and I love the way this picture turned out; look at how the clouds surround the spire on all sides.
As I grew more comfortable with the camera, I brought it to more places, including: Sarku Japan, Baldwin Wallace University, and my church.
I was able to catch the last moments of Fall before the transition into Winter began.
A theme of this set is emptiness; a majority of the pictures show scenes of empty buildings, classrooms, and public outdoor areas.
It's only till the end do we see where all the people are: the Jack Frost Parade! Looking through these pictures gives me conflicting feeling of loneliness and holiday warmth.
Location: North Olmsted; Sarku Japan
About: While waiting for my order to complete I took this picture. This used to be a restaurant called Brown Bag Burger, but it closed and was replaced with this place, Sarku. I always remember there being a lot of people inside Brown Bag Burger, so to see the interior mostly empty every time I pick up food makes me a bit sad. The walls also used to be hand painted showing a farm with a tornado passing through, now those walls are just plain color.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Conservatory of Music
About: At BW, the Conservatory is a massive building that's very easy to get lost in. It's actually like three or four different buildings fused together, but with many paths, hallways, and nooks to find and explore. I found this small courtyard space while wondering through the halls one day; I think areas like this are really neat.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Conservatory of Music
About: Another area within the Conservatory. Notice the two differing buildings on opposite sides and the funky windows straight across.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Conservatory of Music
About: This is one of the many classrooms within the building. I was exploring the building on a day when no one was on campus, so nearly all the rooms were empty like this. On a normal school day this building is packed, with music radiating from all corners.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Conservatory of Music
About: Deep within the Conservatory is the main auditorium where concerts and performances are held. This was taken from the balcony seating on the second floor; I'm glad they left the door unlocked!
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Conservatory of Music
About: A better focused shot from a few rows higher up. The lone chair on stage with the two music stands gives a lonely feel to this image, but even more so from it being in the center of all the light; everything else around it is darker, putting the attention on this chair.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Conservatory of Music
About: Now on the first floor of the auditorium, this looks straight at the stage with a random music stand in the middle of the rows. This picture obviously didn't turn out as well, due to multiple errors on my part, but ultimately because of the low lighting in the room; I'm also unsure if having flash turned on helped or made it worse.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Conservatory of Music
About: This image looks out to some shops on Front Street: A pinball game room, a nerdy collectables shop, a bar, and a restaurant. The view is from a classroom on one of the higher floors of the Conservatory.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Conservatory of Music
About: In the main lobby of the Conservatory. Decorated with Christmas ornaments.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Marting Hall
About: This is the front entrance to the English building; I spent a lot of time in here for class and to study. This might be one of the oldest buildings on campus, which shows especially on the inside.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Outside Marting Hall
About: This pictures a building that likely used to function as a church, now part of the Conservatory. The red truck in front helps brighten the image away from the dull colors and white sky.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Outside the Student Union
About: In the distance you can see the top of Marting Hall, and might be a nice picture if it wasn't taken from the parking lot. I don't know what I was seeing when I took this picture, but is a good example of me being trigger happy with the camera, excited to take pictures of as much as possible (while still being conscious of how much film I'm spending).
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; South Campus Dorms
About: Notice the three orange traffic cones on top of the light poles. I wonder if those were tossed up by students or marked by campus staff. Regardless, I love the look of this building, especially with the snow falling and the sky completely white.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Outside the Student Union
About: The building poorly framed here is the Student Union, Strosacker Hall. I'm not sure why I didn't spend a bit longer trying to center in the building, the image would have turned out much better.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; South Campus
About: This is a dorm building right next to where Marting Hall is. With a similar style to Marting Hall, the old stones and architecture is amazing and very skillfully made. The snow and the empty seats also capture a feeling of loneliness. I took this picture roaming around waiting for class to start.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Marting Hall
About: Looking outside from a classroom on the second floor of Marting Hall. I got to class early because of the heavy snow we were getting, making the view outside beautiful. What I enjoy most about this image is the snow frozen in time covering the entire picture; this really captures the Winter season.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Marting Hall
About: A picture from inside the Marting Hall classroom. With it being so snowy outside, most people were skipping class to stay home, causing campus to feel totally empty.
Location: Berea; Front Street
About: The Jack Frost Festival is an event in Berea where they have a parade, food trucks, fireworks, and so much more. This picture was taken by the clock tower (pictured left) of some lights they had set up on the trees.
Location: Berea; Coe Lake
About: Down by Coe Lake looking at the gazebo. This was taken from the top of a tree fort.
Location: Berea; Coe Lake
About: A better view of the tree fort and large crowds of people attending this event.
Location: Berea; Coe Lake
About: Here you can see some of the food stands on the left and the lights lining the water. It's very impressive how much effort they put into decorating Coe Lake and the surrounding area.
Location: Berea; Coe Lake
About: This image shows people from below the tree fort. There's a lot of motion blur of the people going about their night, but no too much as to be hard to interpret. This gives a look of action and busyness, which captures what this event is like.
Location: Home; Foyer
About: Jake the dog sitting by the front door, taken from the second floor looking down.
Location: Home; Foyer
About: What I really like about this picture is the sunlight coming through the front door. The long shadows of Jake, the house and trees outside show that the day is reaching it's end, a time to take a break from work.
Location: Home; Foyer
About: I'm not sure what he was looking at, but the long ray of light shining through is like a spot like on Jake; everything else is kept more in the shadow to keep the focus on him.
Location: Olmsted Falls; Grace Church
About: Taken by my brother, this was taken at our church after a christmas service; we were waiting for our parents to finish talking with their friends. I'm really happy with how this picture turned out, I have such a happy look!
