Continuing from the previous gallery, this roll finishes off all the pictures I took while at Cedar Point, showing more of the different coasters. It continues with pictures of Jake before finishing with pictures from the park in my Nana's neighborhood. More images than I like suffer from a "light leak", which is characterized by the orange blobs in the picture. Errors like this are impossible to know about until you develop the film and see the picture.
Overall, I really do like the pictures and how they turned out. My favorite picture I've taken up to this point, "Inside Nana's House", which is basically my dream house, but more on that later. I'd like to think that at this point I've become far more familiar with these cameras so that the pictures turn out nicer. The images of the neighborhood park for instance turned out very well; mistakes beyond my control appear to be less frequent, and this is not to say there aren't area's I can still improve, I just think that the quality of each individual picture is greater than from when I started.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: Cedar Point has one area in the park that looks very old-timey. There are buildings like this, leather and glass work shops, massive trees all around, and a petting zoo with various animals. I really like the look of this building, it looks very authentic, like it was here before the park but never torn down.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: The coaster you see reaching up the highest is the Top Thrill 2; it's the fastest coaster in the park and probably a favorite among park-goers.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: One of my favorite rides; the Millennium Force goes very high up for the first hill (pictured here), then speeds down as it goes up and down more hills. The rumour I always heard as a kid is that you can see Canada from the top.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: Another view of Millennium Force from our spot in line. I like this picture because it gives a unique angle of the first hill, but the line of people also adds charm.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: Another view of Millennium Force from our spot in line. Here I used the zoom on the camera to capture one of the coasters as they were making their way up. This ride had three different colored coasters, red, yellow, and blue. As we were waiting in line, we all took bets as to which color coaster we would end up on. I believe we got the yellow one.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: A picture of me and Omu while we were waiting in line; this was taken by a friend whom was visiting for the weekend. It's funny how when he took the picture, he made sure to get both me and this stranger into frame. As you can also see, the bright light in the top right indicates that the camera's flash went off, which is funny considering the time of day. I don't know who this guy is behind me, but he fits well into the picture; he also looks oddly familiar...
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: This is a new ride they were currently testing when we visited today. I will never ride this, it does this terrifying thing where the track tilts, completely detaching from both one end and connecting to another. I hope I explained that well, but my point is that this is something I'd never want to ride, although it does look really cool.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: An easy shot of Rougarou while walking through the park. I captured this at a good time to get the coaster in the shot, but if I only waiting a second longer the coaster would be more in the foreground.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: Blue Streak is a ride that was built in the 1960's, and it's still up and running to this day. The line for this ride isn't ever very long, but that's because you can really feel its age. If you have back or neck problems, you should NOT ride this. I really do like this ride, but after riding it just once your back and neck hurts from it snapping you around up and down, left and right.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: A view of the park as we were walking about. I didn't realize it taking the photo, but this perfectly looks down Corkscrew, the blue ride right in the far center that loops around. I think this shot would have been better if I took it horizontally instead of vertical.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: Another view of Rougarou, with Iron Dragon standing before it. I don't have too much to say about this picture, other than "not bad I guess".
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: I was with two other people this day, and they both really wanted to ride Top Thrill 2. Since I was unwilling to, I took comfort on the bleachers they had watching the ride. Top Thrill 2 has these really cool sound effects that play when launching the coaster, and overall is kind-of fun to watch, especially to see the people and their reaction when it first launches.
Location: Sandusky; Cedar Point
About: A picture of the welcome sign as we were leaving the park. The coaster in the background is the Gatekeeper, which is at the very front of the park.
Location: Unknown
About: Likely taken at home, this picture has three key components that make it what it is: the green tree in the bottom right, the blue sky which gets darker higher up in the shot, and the large white cloud in the middle. I really like this image and think that each of these three parts fit together very well.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: One of my better shots of Jake. The setting here is in the shade provided by a large tree, with sun visible in the background showing that it's a sunny day. Despite being in the shade, Jake stands out bright and clear, perfectly in focus standing upright in his usual way. What he see's off camera I don't know, but this beautiful dog was beautifully captured in this photo.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: When I took this (and the next) photo, I wanted to get the tree in frame thinking that it would lead to a cool shot. Although I think the image turned out fine, the subject of the picture is Jake, not the tree which unfortunately takes up over a third of the frame. I'm not sure of how I could've better staged this shot; although the image is fine, it could be better.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: This image better captures my intent from the previous picture. Jake remains the subject, even if he is further away, with the tree not taking up too much of the shot. The lighting overall is better too; unlike the previous picture, the tree doesn't appear to be illuminated or glowing (I likely had flash on in the previous).
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: I like this picture, it very well captures the nature that surround us at home; the trees in the distance of different colors and shades of green, the grass covering the earth, and the branches at the top of the image. The image does appear to be on the brighter side, and it is suffering from some "light leak", but besides this I like the end result; Jake laying out on the driveway is a nice touch too.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: It's hard for me to describe what I feel and see in the picture. The Clubhouse surrounded by all the different trees and the slight haze in the sky give off a nostalgic vibe, or a dreamy feel, or a comforting memory... All there is to say is I like this image.
Location: Neighborhood Park; Baseball Field
About: The park in this neighborhood has aged a lot since I was a kid. I guess it hasn't really changed too much, but it's become cared for a lot less. This is more clear in the following pictures, but you scan see it here from the weeds in the grass and the baseball field which is totally covered with grass now instead of dirt. Even through its apparent age, I still like it here; warm memories come back whenever I go walking though here.
Location: Neighborhood Park; Playground
About: The playground I used to play on as a kid. All the weeds in the grass is very unfortunate as I remember this place being to fresh and alive in my youth (or maybe I just never noticed it). The playground itself has not changed at all. Everything is original to how it was back when I was young, but also back when it was first built who knows how long ago. This is my no means fancy, but I had fun here; I feel like playground now-a-days have darker duller colors and aren't as bright and exciting looking as this, I wonder why.
Location: Neighborhood Park; Jungle Dome
About: I'm not sure what exactly you'd call this, but this was something I had a lot of fun playing on as a kid. It's amazing to see it today and notice that it has not changed at all, the only real difference being the grass covered with weeds. The red and yellow theme of this also is very symbolic of this dome, even more so is the circle shape formed by smaller triangles. This image is really stirring up my imagination...
Location: Neighborhood Park; Roundabout
About: One of my favorite shots; the roundabout sharp and in focus with the rest of the park blurry. The dirt ring around the roundabout shows it does still see use despite its clear age.
Location: Neighborhood Park; Top of the Playground
About: When coming to this park as a kid I remember it being absolutely huge. Those swings in the distance felt like they were so much further from the playground, and the open grass field looked miles long. I miss those days when the world felt this big; now things feel different since seeing things though the eyes of an adult. I see the imperfections that I missed as a kid, unable to look past the reality of the world that I was either blind to or ignorant of in my youth.
Location: Neighborhood Park
About: At the center of the park is an American Flag. It wasn't windy the day I took this picture, so I couldn't get it waving in the wind; despite this I still like the resulting image, especially with the giant tree in the background towering over the flagpole.
Location: Nana's House; Kitchen
About: Of every picture I've taken thus far, this is my favorite. This is the inside of Nana's house on an average day. There is so much to look at in the picture, from the decorations to the counter space and everything between. What you are looking at is my dream home; a place with character and personality. If you point at something and ask "where did this come from" you'll be told a story about a family member or friend who gave it to her, or how it's from her home village in Serbia, or that it was going to be thrown away but was taken to be kept and held onto. It's a home like this that I want to live in, not your modern minimalist-styled house that has no personality, that doesn't feel lived in.
Location: Nana's House; Living Room
About: The same vase of hand-knit flowers I photographed months earlier. Nothing here is different, except where I was sitting to take the picture. I've already said this, but I love these flowers, Nana does such a good job making these. The pedestal it's place upon is al very unique, I'm not sure where you find something like this.
Location: Nana's House; Kitchen
About: Or maybe a Hen. Statues like these are very common to find around Nana's house, and each one is so unique and well made. I feel iffy about this picture, it's a bit out of focus and the background leaves much to be desired. I could've moved the bird and angled myself as to prevent the corner of the room from being in shot.
Location: Nana's House; Back Yard
About: The tree in the back with the statues underneath is a quince tree. It has this unique swirl and these green fruits that start falling around Fall. This tree was planted by my Great Grandfather. Nana will occasionally make Jam using its fruits.
Pictures taken here span the time between my last week of University and a few weeks post graduation. We're finally in the Summer Season so I'm enjoying spending as much time outside. Pictures here showcase places such as: Crocker Park, the woods behind our Church, a community parade, and BW campus.
The camera I used here is the one I prefer to use for more casual pictures; it's easier to use and honestly more satisfying. As such, not all the pictures here I tried to make perfect. At least with a point and shoot camera, I don't think you really need to spend all too long trying to line up a shot to make it perfect, just finding something to photograph and capturing it without much of a thought is good enough. I like many of the images here for this reason; they're uncomplicated.
Location: North Olmsted; Crocker Road
About: Although this is the first picture in this gallery, it was actually the last picture I took on this camera before all the film was used up. Because of that, I didn't put a lot of effort into making it a good shot, I really just wanted to finish off the roll so I could send it to be developed. You can tell it's the last shot because of it doesn't take up the entire frame; above the black line is the previous picture on the roll of film (not included in this gallery; it wasn't a very good shot).
Location: North Olmsted; Crocker Road
About: Another throw-away picture I took to finish off the roll of film. Usually a roll of film with 36 exposures will give you 36 pictures to take before all the film is used. This is not always true though, as you may have more or less pictures depending on how the film is loaded into the camera. For example, this roll of film was for 36 exposures, but I got 38 pictures out of it because I put it in well. This shocked me as never usually do so good loading up the film, so having two extra pictures to burn through was very surprising, but also welcoming.
Location: Crocker Park; Center
About: I was with my brother getting food at a place called Nathans, which is my favorite place to eat in Crocker Park. While waiting for our food I gave the camera to my brother to take a picture. I must've been saying something when he took the picture, but it came out really good regardless. The weather was hot and sunny, so being outside felt great. I just don't understand how you could be wearing a hoodie in this weather...
Location: Crocker Park; Center
About: Next to Nathans is Auntie Anne's Pretzels, which you can never go wrong with. Like the previous image, this was captured while waiting for our food, so not too much thought went in this picture; even still, I like the way it turned out, especially with the lights above and the buildings in the background.
Location: Grace Church Woods; Olmsted Falls
About: The landscape surrounding our church is very foresty; walking through its trails you'll find a lot of nature all around. This picture captures the tops of some trees as I was walking through them.
Location: Grace Church Woods; Olmsted Falls
About: Following the trail you'll come across this river. It's difficult to get a good picture down the river due to all the trees, luckily I did find this window through the branches looking out at someones property. Imagine living there, right up next to the river with woods surrounding you everywhere else.
Location: Grace Church Woods; Olmsted Falls
About: Our church used to be a different church called Hope, but even before that it was a different church. Regardless of which church it was, they have this old platform in the woods with seating around it; probably used for youth programs. Obviously, this has not seen used in many years, so much so that the wood has broken off of the platform and rusty nails are sticking out.
Location: Grace Church Woods; Olmsted Falls
About: A general picture of the forest behind the church. Being surrounded by all this nature is so nice; walking through the woods alone is so relaxing and peaceful, and really gets my imagination going. This is a good place to think and to write.
Location: Home; Family Room
About: A picture of me bugging Jake for a picture while he tries to sleep. I believe he's a very photogenic dog, yet he's not always wanting to have his picture taken. The cage is his happy place; with his bed, a blanket, and a bone he's got everything he needs to be happy and comfortable.
Location: Home; Family Room
About: By one means or another I got Jake out of his cage. I captured this during his stretching routine he does every time he exits the cage. The picture is very out of focus which hints at this being a rushed picture, which it was.
Location: Family Friends House
About: One of two dogs we were dog sitting for a few days, Scout is full of energy and very playful. When he gets the zoomies, there is no stopping him.
Location: Family Friends House
About: Jade is the other dog we were dog sitting. She is elegant and proper, standing with a tall yet quiet presence. While we were dog sitting, she would stand like pictured staring at you for minutes on end. A beautiful dog.
Location: Home; Family Room
About: Doesn't he look so cute, so comfortable inside his cage? I love it, and I love him.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: A view of our back yard. This was recently after the neighbors got rid of an old playground they had in their back yard, and a bit before a new one was built in its place. I really like all the grass and the trees in the distance. There's a lot of nature around us and this image does a good job showing that.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: I was sitting out on the swing one day when this car comes out of nowhere driving through our development. It's not everyday you see an old car like this in the neighborhood, so I quickly took out my camera and caught this picture of it. The car is kind-of in focus with everything else blurred. As I took the picture, I made sure to follow the car with the camera to try and keep it in focus. I think the picture turned out fine, especially considering how much I was rushing to get this picture. You can also see Jake standing in the grass by the sidewalk.
Location: Olmsted Falls; Bagley Road
About: The start of the Memorial Day Parade in Olmsted Falls. Of the five people walking in front of the fire truck, the second person is the Mayor. He seems like a nice guy, thing is I don't know anything about him. The building in the background is a Church/School.
Location: Olmsted Falls; Bagley Road
About: An old military vehicle part of the memorial day parade. I love seeing cars like this driving through the parade or our community on some random day.
Location: Olmsted Falls; Bagley Road
About: This red car is owned by the local popcorn shop, the guy inside being the owner. It's such a unique vehicle that perfectly symbolizes the popcorn shop and the family feal of it. They have really good popcorn, but even better milk tea lol.
Location: Olmsted Falls; Bagley Road
About: The Marching Band for Olmsted Falls High School. This portion of the parade is my favorite; seeing the band is so much fun and brings back warm memories to when I was in the band. The Golden Bullets, the flag girls, always lead the band with high brass behind them followed by woodwinds then lows with the percussion in the back. This order repeats again behind the percussion due to the size of the band (250-300, somewhere around there). The lady out of line in front is the head band director for the High School.
Location: Olmsted Falls; Bagley Road
About: Another shot of the band. It's funny that since I first joined the band eight years ago the uniform has not changed. The guy in brown is the assistance band director for the High School.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: Mine and my brothers cars, outside with the morning sun shining nicely. The sharp red of his car and the clear silver of my car fit together like brothers, very fitting. Although this is obviously a random shot I took for no strong reason I really like how this picture turned out. Morning is my favorite time of day so much, and this image shows that summer morning very well.
Location: Baldwin Wallace University; Outside Loomis Hall
About: A shot of the Student Union from behind Loomis Hall. Being the last week of school, campus was totally empty. I really like the landscape of Baldwin Wallace, they do a great job making it look and feel clean, welcoming, and home-like.
Location: Knowlton Center; Data Vis Lab
About: This room, often referred to as a fishbowl, was where I spend a lot of time in class, preparing for competitions, studying, and even interviewing. With the room being locked behind badge access it was usually empty apart from if there was a class or meeting going on, this means the room was often empty for me to use (I had badge access). Pretty much every room in Knowlton has these glass walls, so anyone could peak into a classroom and see who's inside and what they're doing. Especially with the front doors being right there and a lounge/hallway to the left, it can be a bit distracting with all the movement and activity.
Location: Kamm Hall; Classroom
About: Understanding Asia was a class I took my first year at Baldwin Wallace. The professor, Dr. Lebo, did an amazing job teaching us about Asia and its various countries, even better is that he speaks the language for some of these countries and has traveled many times to them. This made lectures fun and engaging, hearing all the stories from his travels and first-hand experiences. This was also the last time he taught the class before moving to a different state. If I could retake any class at BW, it would be this one without a doubt.
Location: Kamm Hall; Classroom
About: Another class I took in Kamm was Business Communications. The class was fine but nothing special or particularly memorable. Kamm Hall is very dated looking, and I love this about it. Each of the classrooms have a different orientation to the seating arrangement, which is in contrast to other buildings across campus that feel cookie-cutter.
Location: Kamm Hall; Classroom
About: Although I never had a class in this room, I really like the vibe it presents. It's the only room in the building that is layered like so; it's also right in the middle of the second floor, so no windows makes it feel safe and cozy.
In June I bought a new film camera. I was having a lot of fun with the point and shoots up to this point, but I wanted to take this hobby a step further. I wanted more control over my pictures, something that required thought and patience to be put into each picture. This was actualized through the purchase of my first SLR camera, the 1979 Canon AV-1 (with a standard 50mm lens). This introduced things I never had to think about before: light metering, f/stop, focus, ISO/ASA, shutter speed (although this was mostly automatic).
The roll of film here can be best described as a "playtest", where I test the functions of the camera and how pictures turn out with settings tuned in certain ways. Because of this, there's a lot of duplicate photos, but these show the differences that occur when things are changed around.
Of the three cameras I now have, shooting with the SLR is by far my favorite. The mechanical feel of taking pictures and pulling the lever to advance the film is so satisfying.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: This photo and the next aim to test different f/stops. This picture has a lower f/stop, thus more light enters the camera and the background becomes a bit blurry. My preference is this image; mainly because I think the lighting is better.
Location: Home; Front Yard
About: Same shot as the previous photo, but using a high f/stop as to reduce the amount of light taken in my the camera. This also puts the background into focus, so everything in frame is clear and sharp.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: A vertical shot of our back yard after a rainy day. The focus here is set to infinity and is likely using a higher f/stop. I like the the chair in the foreground is blurred slightly, drawing attention to the background.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: Like the previous picture, the only differences here is it's horizontal, uses a higher f/stop, and there is nothing distracting in the foreground. I prefer this image over the previous.
Location: Home; Dining Room
About: These two images play with the focus of the camera, particularly on a close up subject. The focus here is set on the pink plant in the middle. My intent was to have both the background and foreground blurred, but this was only partially successful. I probably could have achieved this by using a lower f/stop, but then the image would be underexposed. THAT could maybe be corrected by setting the film speed to be lower than it actually is, so the image is over-exposed slightly.
Location: Home; Dining Room
About: The focus here was set on the closer plant, while using a lower f/stop to blur the background. I like how this picture turned out, although I feel like the plant is rather darker than I'd like.
Location: Home; Upstairs
About: The AV-1 has a backlight control button for cases when a subject is backlit. I probably used it here which is why it's a bit darker than the following photo. The focus and f/stop should be identical between the two pictures.
Location: Home; Upstairs
About: My biggest challenge with this camera, at least starting out, is figuring out lighting and the best way to configure the camera to get the best picture out of a shot, without it being under or over-exposed too much. Generally, it seems better to have the image over-exposed than have it dark with shadows; I like this image more than the previous.
Location: Home; Foyer
About: This image was difficult to line up. Here, I'm holding a handful of treats to a blurred Jake. The idea was to have my hand in focus while everything else was blurred. Turns out, this is hard to do using one hand with a dog that cannot sit still. I like out this picture turned out anyway.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: This picture and the next play around with the f/stop yet again. Here a higher f/stop is used so that nothing is blurred too much (the background isn't sharp, so I'm not using the highest f/stop setting here). The contrast between the light and shadow turned out well here!
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: Same thing can be said about the previous photo here, the difference being solely the f/stop being set lower. Focus is on the flowers in the middle, with everything around this center point becoming increasingly blurred.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: Just like the "Flowering Plant" photos previously, this picture plays with the f/stop. Here it is set to be high.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: The f/stop here is lower and by know you know what that means. I like this image a lot, but probably because I really like this statue.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: An adorable picture of Jake laying out by the fire pit enjoying the sun. His squinted eyes are so cute as he faces the camera, which is especially difficult to have him do.
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: One of the difficulties of shooting with an SLR is setting up the photo. First focusing on the subject followed by adjusting the f/stop all while being conscious of the lighting as to not over or under-expose the picture can be challenging. This is especially true for when your subject doesn't like to sit still or look at you (but to be fair, a big black box is being put up towards his face. Sorry Jake).
Location: Home; Back Yard
About: Jake, now standing after seeing something (or nothing) in the distance. Everything I said about the previous two photos takes effect here as well.
Location: Berea; Behind Dairy Queen
About: Me, my brother, and my Father went out to a golfing range to practice driving, at least them two did. I opted to be the camera man and play with my new camera. Not all pictures I took appear here just to note. As you can see, the golfing range is right behind the red roofed building, which is a local DQ.
Location: Berea; Behind Dairy Queen
About: Looking out on the golf range. If anything this picture serves to see how far distance shots look and the detail you can uncover. This is actually a really boring picture.
Location: Berea; Behind Dairy Queen
About: The bucket we got, once filled with golf balls, now empty. There's no reason why this picture was taken other than to use the camera.
Location: Westlake; Crocker Park
About: Me and my Mother went to Crocker Park for some reason, mainly for her but I chose to tag along. I brought this camera to use up the film so I could get it developed and analyze the results.
Location: Westlake; Crocker Park
About: I've said it before, but my favorite time of day is first the morning, then the evening. I love it when the sun is at a low point and you get these shadows stretching out. This picture does a good job showing that. If you didn't already know, would you have guessed this was taken in the morning or the evening?
Location: Westlake; Crocker Park
About: I spent a while sitting in front of this sign waiting for all the cars to pass by. One thing that I'm beginning to realize I'm not the best at is centering the subject and keeping it straight.
Location: Westlake; Crocker Park
About: This bridge is part of the movie theater; you pass through it after getting your ticket to where all the theaters are.
Location: Westlake; Crocker Park
About: Lining the street are many stores on either side. I found a seat outside one place my Mother wanted to pop into and took this picture; you can see the movie theater all the way in the back (pictured in the previous image).
Location: Westlake; Crocker Park
About: As pictured earlier on this page, this is Nathans, my favorite place to eat in Crocker Park. All the pictures I've taken in Crocker Park feel empty due to the lack of people in them. Although I like this look generally, I enjoy having people pictured as it adds life and action to the photo; this photo is void of those feelings.
Location: Home; Living Room
About: A simple shot of our fireplace mantel in the living room. Although it's not the first image I set in this gallery, this was the first picture I took with the AV-1 SLR. I have nothing special to comment about it, especially since it was for nothing more than to test the camera.
Location: Home; Foyer
About: A vase full of flowers hand knit by Nana; you can also see some knit bees in the flowers. The colors of this image are really good, the lighting is solid, and the focus is right on. The background is actually a mirror, showing the rooms behind me. It may have been worth it to turn the lights on in the back so there isn't this black void to the left.
